Context

After winning the Techlug contest about building a LMP1 RaceCar, I received some sets, including the #42037 Buggy. Then I have searched for a creation with using the lime wheel, and found obviously the monster energy color scheme. Then, I found the awesome B.J Baldwin baja truck from recoil 1 video and I wanted to make my own version in lego.

Functionality

The aim of this baja truck is to reproduce the baja truck of B.J Baldwin with nice bodywork and color scheme, then the functionality are quite basic,. It includes drives, steering and suspensions.

The baja truck is powered by two L Motor, with only gearing : 20/differential on the rear wheel as real, ensure a good speed. The L motors are mounted in the suspensions axle, it enables me to have more space in the chassis to put the battery box lower and reduce the balanced weight. The fake engine is powered by the rear axle, with simple axle which cross the chassis and goes to the crankshaft thanks to 16t/16t/16t gearing.

The steering is made with a servo motor, with 12t bevel gear on a rack, which ensures a good reactivity because no more gearing, the servo motor is placed the nearest as possible of the axle. There is no return to steering due to the lack of empty space around the front axle.

The suspensions is based as real, the front is equipped with double wishbone suspensions, and on the rear, there is a floating live axle with a ball join and two connecting rods to keep the axle in the axis of the chassis. The suspensions are quite smooth in order to reproduce the behavior of the real B.J Baldwin baja truck.

Design

The most important work I made was on the design. I wanted to reproduce the design of the real baja truck including the shape and color scheme. I have for that used many panels to obtain the correct curves, and choose correctly the color regarding the color scheme. On the front, I have reproduced the bonnet with the opened shape on the fake engine. This is a personal choice for me to have an opened shape, in order to highlight the engine. I have also used ELite Kit for the front light.

Concerning the middle of the vehicle, thanks to the positioning of the driving motors, I have put the battery box lower in the chassis in order to have a low center of gravity, which enables me also to add some details on the interior, including seat and dashboard. On the roof, I have placed a bank of light to “coat” the roof with details, there is some versions of real B.J Baldwin which have headlight, and some without.

The rear of the vehicle has been also well worked with the additional wheel with lime flex to reproduce some frames which restrain the wheel. Some details like rear panel, exhausts and light make some interesting details.

Then the last part of the design identity : the sticker. I have made my own sticker in order to reproduce the correct shape and  color scheme, without it, it is just a black / white / lime baja truck, but with it, it is a monster energy baja truck ! I have made it based on picture and recolorizing blueprint from RC model, and then printed on a special sticker paper.

Conclusion

To conclude, I am proud of this creations, it is well balanced regarding the functionally and design, The chassis is strong enough to handle the road and the design has not been made with lot of compromise. I have reproduced all shape and color I wanted. Concerning the climbing abilities and speed, there are good but not awesome, because of a high weigh of around 1kg500, combined with two L motor is too heavy to ensure awesome performance. But the aim was to reproduce the Baja truck with good looking design, and motorized, which has been raised, more motor or different motor would not solve this. This is funny that I, Sariel, and RM8 Creations decided to create our own version of the baja truck, without concerted ourselves before, nice coincidence ! You can watch the Sariel of RM8 Version to have more performance, but less precision looking.
